Cloud CAD
Cloud CAD refers to computer-aided design software delivered and executed in the cloud rather than installed locally on a workstation. Cloud CAD platforms (Onshape, Fusion 360, Plasticity online, Shapr3D) eliminate the need for CAD file servers, network-attached storage (NAS), and synchronization headaches. Cloud CAD provides native version control, real-time multi-user collaboration, and instant access to design revision history without emailing files. Models are stored in cloud databases, making them instantly accessible from any device with a browser.
Why it matters
Cloud CAD transformed how distributed engineering teams collaborate. Before cloud CAD, teams required file servers, VPN access, and file-locking protocols to prevent overwriting. Cloud CAD enabled real-time simultaneous editing, eliminated the pain of assembly file email handoffs, and made CAD a first-class tool for remote-first and hybrid teams. For product development startups and distributed teams, cloud CAD's architecture is not a feature compromise — it is a deployment advantage over traditional desktop CAD.
