Toolpath Kernel
A toolpath kernel is a licensable software component that computes cutter paths (roughing, finishing, multi-axis, simulation) which CAM vendors embed inside their own products, in the same way CAD vendors license a geometry kernel such as Parasolid or ACIS. ModuleWorks of Aachen is the dominant toolpath kernel supplier; its investors include DMG Mori, Mitsubishi Electric, Kennametal and Autodesk. MachineWorks (Sheffield) is the other significant independent, focused on simulation and verification.
Why it matters
A large share of the apparently diverse independent CAM market runs on one toolpath kernel, itself part-owned by machine tool and tooling OEMs, sitting on top of one geometry kernel owned by Siemens. Peel back the logos and you find two chokepoints. That concentration risk is unpriced by buyers, founders and investors alike, and it shapes who can realistically build the Adaptive Manufacturing layer and who controls the interfaces it depends on.
