Topology Optimization

A computational design method that finds the optimal material distribution within a design space for given structural, thermal, or fluid constraints — minimizing mass or maximizing performance by discovering load-path-efficient forms that parametric modeling cannot reach.

Why it matters

Parametric modeling produces shapes defined by the modeler's intent. Topology optimization discovers shapes defined by physics. The resulting geometries are often lighter, stiffer, or more thermally efficient than intuitively designed equivalents — and are now manufacturable via additive manufacturing.
