PLM Core
PLM Core is the system of record in a thread-centric PLM architecture, responsible for governing trusted product data: the bill of materials, configuration management, change control, and lifecycle state. It does not own all workflows but ensures that governed data is traceable and authoritative.
Why it matters
Defining a PLM Core is a discipline as much as a product choice — it forces the organization to decide which data must be governed centrally and which can live in specialized tools. Done well, PLM Core shrinks the surface area of what the PLM vendor must do well from "everything" to "the BOM, the change order, and the lifecycle state." Done poorly, it's just a rename of an old monolith with the same lock-in.
