NX (CAD Software)
NX CAD (formerly Unigraphics, then NX — marketed as Siemens NX) is Siemens Digital Industries Software's flagship CAD/CAM/CAE platform. NX combines parametric solid modeling, freeform surfacing, large-assembly management, manufacturing programming (NX CAM), and simulation (Simcenter NX) in a single environment. NX is built on the Parasolid geometry kernel (which Siemens also licenses to competing CAD vendors) and uses JT as its neutral 3D visualization format. NX is the dominant CAD platform in automotive powertrain (engine, transmission, driveline systems), aerospace structural design, precision tooling, and mold and die programs. The platform's architecture differs from CATIA and Creo in its approach to large assembly management: NX uses a revision-aware product structure managed by Teamcenter that keeps CAD data in the PLM system rather than on file servers, making it architecturally suited to programs with hundreds of thousands of unique part numbers.
In context
An automotive OEM programs turbine blades on a 5-axis DMG MORI machining center using NX CAM toolpaths generated directly from the NX geometry model — no STEP export, no reimport, no translation loss. A defense contractor manages 500,000+ part numbers across a multi-site program using Teamcenter's managed product structure; every NX revision check-in updates the BOM, triggers a change notification, and preserves the configuration baseline required for ITAR compliance.
Why it matters
NX's native integration with Teamcenter PLM and Opcenter MES gives Siemens the most complete digital thread from product design through manufacturing execution of any single vendor. Changes made in NX automatically register in Teamcenter's PDM layer — design revision, BOM structure, and manufacturing process plan are synchronized without a file export step. NX CAM generates machining programs directly from the NX model without reimporting geometry, closing the CAD/CAM translation gap that causes version drift in shops using separate CAD and CAM platforms. For organizations choosing NX, the depth of integration is the primary value — and the primary constraint. NX/Teamcenter is a coherent ecosystem; switching one component without the other is difficult.
